Geoinformatics MSc

We offer

Anyone who uses digital maps, whether it is just Google Maps or Openstreet Map on their computer or smartphone, or likes to look at maps from the AccuWeather, is using geoinformation systems unnoticeably. Collecting, organising, analysing and displaying spatial data has become part of our lives at a user level that requires only a basic knowledge of computers, smartphones and the internet. However, this knowledge can easily be deepened and turned from a hobby into a skill that can lead to a well-paid job in the labour market. This knowledge can be acquired through a Master degree (MSc) in Geoinformatics. The aim is to train professionals using the full range of spatial data, from data collection to target-specific visualisation.

The training focuses on the following main areas:

  • we teach all modern and traditional methods of data collection, from satellite positioning systems (GPS/GNSS), ground and airborne laser scanning (TLS and ALS) to aerial photography and satellite remote sensing;
  • special attention will be paid to uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV) as one of the most efficient data collection tools today, from flight planning to photography and photogrammetric processing;
  • teaching the analysis of 3D point clouds of laser scanned data and the possibilities of object extraction (e.g. reconstruction of buildings in scale models);
  • to manage data from data structures to database management;
  • programming is an important part of the training, where we teach the basics of logical thinking and the use of the R and Python programming language, but not all geoinformaticians will become programmers - this is only one possible path of becoming a professional;
  • data analysis, starting with the application of statistical techniques and ending with state-of-the-art methods of image processing (machine learning, neural networks);
  • data visualisation will be presented to students as a static map on paper or digitally, or even as an interactive web map where the information displayed for objects is tailored to the users’ needs.

Our institute has two computer laboratories well equipped with software, 4 RTK GNSS (with an accuracy of about 3-4 cm), 5 UAVs (2 with high resolution visible range, 4 with multispectral and 1 with thermal cameras), 2 TLS scanners and a geodetic total station for students enrolled in geoinformatics. Marketable knowledge and experience can be gained not only in the classroom, but also through internships with a number of our industrial partners.
